This is one of the first albums I can remember getting into when I was a kid. My dad went through a UK dance-rock phase—it was this, Fine Young Cannibals, Big Audio Dynamite, and Jesus Jones—and for whatever reason it really spoke to 9-yr-old me. Anyway, not sure what prompted me to revisit it, but I’m surprised by how not-bad it is. Not punk, but not entirely un-punk either. Very 1991, though!

Randall hahaha, yes! That Jesus Jones record does not hold up! Sounds like U2 heard Screamadelica and was like “Oooh, let’s make one of those!” And “The Globe” sounds like proto-Sugar Ray.

Still, I would love to see the alternate future where Nirvana never got big and sample-based rock was the dominant sound of the 90s! I imagine every song would sound like this:

Pavement-:Westing ( by Musket and Sextant)

All this nostalgia is funny because I decided to give a band called Pavement a try these last few days. I had Slanted and Enchanted on tape in high school ( I'm old) and enjoyed it enough. not enough to delve farther, but enjoyed it. there was some Pavement talk on here so I finally got around to giveing a listen. this is all their early singles and it is pretty enjoyable. noisey, kind of weird, abrasive, and with a few actual tunes. like a less punk rock Early Sebadoh. I have a feeling I would find the more indie rock later albums annoying, but who knows

Recently I got into Pavement. Overall I've been checking a lot of what was the indie rock that I was alergic to it and I've been digging it a lot. Guided by Voices and Sonic Youth are two of my favourite bands nowadays, I did ignore them for years and they are so good. Pavement may not be that amazing but still they are great too, "Slanted and Enchanted" is in fact a very good album.

Clif been slowly coming around to pavement, particularly the early singles and "slanted and enchanted". never been crazy about "indie rock" per se but the early pavement stuff seemed pretty rockin and noisy compared to much of the rest of the genre. recently watched the gary young doc and it made me love em even more. can't say i'm an expert on the band but the early stuff definitely scratches a particular itch for me. also if you've ever been to stockton, ca it makes a lot of sense why they'd make the kind of music they made (place is a hellhole).
