Cro-Mags. Nothing to do with all the stuff John Joseph is saying about Raybeez. I can’t hang with Warzone after the first e.p. either.

I'm pretty out of touch now but a long time ago when I was pretty in touch, everyone on the Goner Board was losing it over the first Gris Gris and I bought it without hearing it and thought it was horrible. I still don't like Gris Gris but now I do like the Greg Ashley solo records from the 2010's.

11th hour stubble The video of minutemen playing acoustic guitars on tv is something I did genuinely enjoy.

Look at most popular underground bands of the present day. Far cries from Sun City Girls or Royal Trux--they often rehash the indie rock/post punk
/diy sounds of the past in ever more digestible ways. Minutemen are not so easy listening which is why many of us here dislike. Modern band closest to minutemen is parquet courts?

11th hour stubble I wondered the same thing. Minutemen have been a longtime favorite. Seems like a lot of general SST hate around these parts, but Meat Puppets and Saccharine Trust are all-timers up there with Minutemen. And let's not forget St. Vitus either!

11th hour stubble Why does everyone hate the minutemen?

Beyond "Paranoid Time", it took me decades to get on-board, but they finally clicked a couple years ago. Love 'em now.

11th hour stubble Especially on the early stuff, all their songs start to blend to me. sounds like on long song with lots of stops. that has always been my problem. I keep trying though.

I too love the meat puppets and saccharine trust, as well as St Vitus. no sst hate here

paperhose I don't know that you can find a modern day analog to em, certainly PQ draw from similar territory at times but have a certain NYC, curturally centered (though I know they are rooted from texas and I do like em, despite the consensus here) element that sits almost in contempt with my understanding/positioning of Minutemen. There is a real through line from their very contextual world view to the music they made, which probably can't be replicated in earnest and is part of what makes them special to me. There is an element of naivety mixed with this unflappable ambition and curiosity. They are a classic example of open ears to a handful of distinct influences filtered in such a way where they churn out something greater than the sum of its parts.

and to the point of their material blending together, I see it more as their skill and approach being unmitigated, like incorporating a lot of things but it always just sounds like the 3 guys in the band.

SST catalog is very uneven, but a pretty cool time capsule of Socal and beyond anti hardcore doctrine, bratty, fried, etc rockist vibes.

Every time someone says that Grateful Dead is punk an angel poops their diaper... Also:
      Rush
      Fugazi
      The Smiths
      Minutemen
      fIREHOSE
      Royal Trux
      Pavement
      Jawbreaker
      Mötley Crüe

      A much much more...

Gus Graf watched the future is unwritten on criterion the other night- still don't hold up! Some of their dub songs are alright, and being able to mix genres is cool but the clash are still cringe

11th hour stubble There is an element of naivety mixed with this unflappable ambition and curiosity.

Incredibly well put. Not a requirement for me to be excited, but ideally this is what I get excited about in art generally.

In my college dorm days, I remember we all looked at Pierro Scaruffi's music page. His taste, minutemen and beefheart etc., decently exemplifies the genre. Not stuff I am always excited to listen to, unlike: tvp's, 39 clocks, the kinks, live velvet underground.

11th hour stubble There is a real through line from their very contextual world view to the music they made, which probably can't be replicated in earnest

z'actly. I was also going to say something about their unique melange of influences, related to how musical influences came to people pre- the easy to hear everything instantly Intertubes age but you expressed it much more eloquently.

11th hour stubble I just gave the Minutemen a try with fresh ears to see if i was relying on some forgotten grudge - but I am still not stoked. maybe i just need dumber drum beats

      The Shaggs.
I've put my neck on the chopping block for ya already, don't worry.

I recently realized I think the Wipers suck ass. I didn't know this was my opinion until they came on randomly in the car and I thought "huh, maybe I don't like the Wipers". Mostly Greg Sage's singing, it's just too darn "earnest" and cornball heartfelt. I realize this may not hold water for most.

Mystery_Ship I get this. I don’t dislike the Wipers but I never find it fully satisfying when I put it on
