ah really? i don't hear that either.. i also think they're okay, but surprised by the amount of love those records have gotten (or at least the perception of love from looking at internet etc). was a listen to the album once and never think about it again experience for me, maybe i haven't tried hard enough or somethin..

To be honest the strawman's also only recieved one listen from me here. But they did seem like a band by young cool kids who grew up on parquet courts. Similar to how royal headache sounds like they grew up with strokes, but probably didnt?

Devo caught a moment in time when cities like Akron, Ohio, were in clear decline but not full-on collapse. My extended family worked at GM's Van Nuys Assembly Plant that closed in the 1990s. Personally, Devo works on a few different levels -- the sound of the 1970s was the sound of things falling apart. Paraphrasing Mothersbaugh here.

I used to have Elvis Costello's first four or five albums, but they are long gone. He certainly has a gift for writing original sounding songs, although as you say, his music doesn't make me feel anything. It just leaves me with an empty feeling.

That White Fence record on Make a Mess had some good tracks on it. That was a cut above the rest. I moved back to Los Angeles/Ventura Country in 2011 after living in New Zealand for a year and I remember every local band was trying to get that John Dwyer sound. It was ubiquitous. Reverb knob stuck at 11.

In NZ at the time it was the King Khan and BBQ Show.

Idk, I’m soooo sick of the Ty Segal+John Dwyer reverb industrial complex. They’ve diluted the entire garage/rnr/psych sound and I wanna throw their records across the room.
