All things ian sovoniouoes sucks. Makes me question some friends’ intelligence, but in some cases i don’t need to. Grown ass fake communist man making lil’ zines, bad music and even worse movies.

Also: Love the Rats, Desperate Edge, etc. But i get why Dead Moon gets on some people’s nerves. Mostly has to do with their fans.

On the Portland tip: Always loved the Wipers, but some of the crybaby lyrics… I think this has been covered in depth on the other goner board (facebook)

I'm from Los Angeles and I never liked The Three O'Clock. The rest of the bands from the Paisley scene I generally liked a lot. I also didn't care for Orange Juice and Aztec Camera. The other Postcard stuff I enjoyed.

michael bateman Kind of hard to describe it, but the reason I like Rain Parade is that they sounded (to me) like a band influenced by the Notorious Byrd Brothers but contemporary. And they had one or two tracks on Emergency Third Rail Power Trip that sounded like rewrites of '66-style songs. Derivative. I think those are the weaker tracks on the record. Yeah, that Salvation Army material is better, but it has that vibe I described to it. This is all totally subjective. And I'll also totally contradict myself by saying I really like The Pandoras' debut LP and the next one they cut.

I did like the Rain Parade LP they cut for Island -- Crashing Dream -- that got panned and most people say is terrible but never really listened to it. Explosions in the Glass Palace was also good. Everything they did was great, although I haven't heard the recent LP. The guy who never seems to get credit from that scene was producer Ethan James. From all accounts a great guy and former member of Blue Cheer. He produced some great material at his studio, Radio Tokyo.

Did people like the band True West? I didn't care for their self-titled EP at all and I had high hopes -- with the UC Davis and Steve Wynn connection. Then again, that Suspects 7" is pretty bad.

lotsa psychotic opinions being expressed here. Judgement free zone? Isn't this pretty much a zone completely founded on judgement? har. The only Cole related entries that don't 100% do it for me are Zipper, peirced arrows and the non-Toody western front tunes, but even those have more charm than most.

Ryan Leach you don't like that Suspects 7"? It's a decent poppy new waver. I'm no expurt, but Dream Syndicate first ep and Days of Wine and Roses are awesome, but after that I haven't found much I like.

Wade T Oberlin My theory for dislike is that they set a template for the not too reminiscent and less hyperactive RHCP.

I was at a show at the Olympic Auditorium in 1984 featuring both the RHCP and the Minutemen, and I still distinctly remember walking up the stairs and catching Mike Watt asking a seated George Hurley if he wanted to go outside or something, and Hurley saying, "nah, I want to check out the RHCP". Keith Morris "sang" for the Peppers that night:

"We got an opening slot at the Olympic Auditorium. But Anthony in all his junkie splendor did not show up. Keith Morris from the Circle Jerks said "I'll sing" and so we went out with him. We were just playing the songs and he would yell out stuff - whatever he could."
(SSD and Suicidal Tendencies also played!)

Ty Segall's a great shout. Thee Oh Sees have never done a single thing for me, love or on record.

I would've said Black Lips but Fire reissued a bunch of their stuff recently, was listening at work and was surprised how much I knew/enjoyed.

I will say Black Lips then - I gave them honest listening when they were first "blowing up" and they just left me cold...
Also, someone mentioned The Raspberries- I find myself listening to a ton of power pop lately but for whatever reason the Power Pop Big Three of The Raspberries, Big Star and Badfinger have never grabbed me - even their hits leave me shrugging although I probably love a bunch of other stuff where you could say, "They're just ripping off Big Star dude". 🤷
