Johnny Sick one of the coolest of the hyped private press oddities, story is wild but absolutely unecessary to enjoyment.

checked out some things suggested here yesterday:

Fruited Planes, loving it.
Shrapnel, a few tunes are great, particularly No More Hesitating. I wish the vocals were more gutsy and on top though.

Spent the other night trying to convert someone who is into lotsa current experimental music, and shared a love for big star's 3rd, came out of the gate saying they don't like blues and blues influenced rock. Limited to my records, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Beefheart, booker T, Little Richard, Flies On Sherbert were all in the mix, I think I convinced him by the end of the night. His main gripe was about the 12 bar pattern being an immediate turn off so I was trying to pick songs that did that but with gusto/fracture/intensity. Is the blues pattern a nonstarter for people?

A lot of my favorite music feels like it's just British bands doing a blues pattern but fucking it all up with just a baseline misunderstanding of the blues. It leads to some interesting stuff to say the least, from Groundhogs to Black Sabbath (and obviously the Stones).

He might like the rural stuff. I find myself pairing my "current experimental music" listening with old freeform blues a lot. They both tend to have a lovely ear-grating quality.

Digging the Alvida album on Static Shock right now. Great relief for anyone who loved the Coeur A L’Index record and wanted more!

The band's story begins when the children's mother abandoned them, leaving them in the care of their father, Harold Moore Sr. A wealthy woman, a friend of the family, took the situation to heart and decided to help them. She bought musical instruments for the children and financed music lessons, offering them a deal: if they learnt at least three songs, they would get a place on a local television telethon. The children quickly learned and began performing on television. Later, the woman financed the recording of an album, suggesting that they compose original songs.
Their father, Harold Moore Sr., wrote all the songs on the album, many of which were critical of the children's alcoholic mother. Once recorded, the album was produced in a limited run. However, an accident during the packaging process damaged many of the records, further reducing availability.

Today I played Fucking Mess (one of the best BRAINBOMBS records, doncha' think?) 4 times in a row at full volume with headphones, and while in the shower I listened to the second SPLIT SYSTEM album, which is so good that anyone with even the smallest interest in OZ guitar music should fucking worship it.

I'm lucky enough to live in Melbourne and try to catch every Split System live show. They never fail to impress.
Fucking Mess is one fine slab of wax, but for me the A side of Obey is Brainbombs at their best.

I'm just shuffling the entire Steve Adamyk discog today. For this style of guitar pop there's little else that comes close other than maybe Gentleman Jesse? And Jay but that's obvious.

The Marvelous Darlings 7"s scratch the same itch for me, not sure if that's just as I was buying them at then same time I was buying the early Steve Adamyk stuff.

terminalsunset You ever listen to the Post Teens (act out of Gainesville)? They overlapped with early SAB stuff and sound not too dissimilar (maybe slightly tougher). But I mentally lump them, SAB, and Marked Men together: cool, listenable poppy (but not “pop-“!) punk.

Steve was on Termbore I believe. I was just listening to some Magnolias, so followed it with some Adamyk ("Third"). Definitely a few leagues above generic "pop-punk". Any band that puts out a full Ramones album cover album is disqualified immediately...

Ruby In the end he seemed to cop to liking hill blues and stuff, more of a "blues hammer" complex that might have created a blind spot, which is fair and he is European which might exacerbate that sentiment, but he didn't like Beefheart and said early Stones was particularly irksome. I get it. Also the "current experimental music" he is into is moreso in the experimental pop kinda vain, electro acoustic but hi-fi, highly processed kinda stuff i think, but now I'm just shovelling words in to this poor guy's mouth.
