So far out of the egg-o-sphere that I had no idea Marty had addressed it and that it made anyone upset. Where did he post the original comment? I didn’t think he was on social media.
It’s strange to me that anyone got upset. Egg punk seems to be pretty openly derided at this point. It kind of shocks me that I still get demos from people who self describe as egg punk.

My band started around 2010. We were/are deeply inspired/influenced amazing bands from that era: Pink Reason, Tyvek, Home Blitz, ... One of the reasons I was able to find out about these bands was the music media coverage--aided by the introduction of the term "shitgaze".

One of our early shows was opening for ** ***** in Missoula, MT. They were incredible live and we drank a lot together that night. I was young at the time, but they were even younger. However, some of the band members were not nice to us. Suprisingly the reason was that we clearly were enthusiastic about their band and other peer bands from the midwest. They mocked us for liking shitgaze music. We were accused of liking Wavves. My memory stops there, but it was not so pleasant.

At the end of the day shitgaze was some joke term for music informed by mike rep and other columbus heros. Egg Punk is same except it is gizmos and other Indiana sounding punks. Snooper replaced Wavves. Please stop complaining about this stuff.

Just the other day someone legit told me Soup Activists sound suspiciously similar to Home Blitz! Is it ok to be shitgaze in 2025?

I thought “egg” and “chain” were just memes. Very embarrassing for all parties involved

        Randall

Randall he wrote a blurb for the upcoming Evinspragg LP on his label's Bandcamp. It's pretty great.

paperhose no idea what shitgaze is but home blitz is pop to my ears. tyvek is rock n roll.

i blame henry rollins for egg punk

Randall it’s under the write-up for the most recent record on the Inscrutable Bandcamp.

Interesting take but personally I’m still obsessed with first drafts, first takes, “instant music”, which to me does not necessarily reference egg punk. I think a lot of special mistakes, improvisation, and that lightning in a bottle magic can be missed when you’re spending copious amounts of time working on a song/recording. First thought best thought is not always the best route but it’s worth exploring. But hell what do I know.

Clif Name names. was it a missoula band?

Two letters then five letters. Super young around 2010. I think you can figure it out. Unnamed band were all around arrogant little shitheads but they were also like 15.

            • Clif replied to this.

Randall if it is one person's name for the band I can figure it out. if it is a band band, I am drawing a blank.

                It’s a scandal Randall!

Clif Not Missoula. The band was not dd owen related. Not from Montana. Older members were cool then and I would say friends now (I hope). Younger members 100% deserve a pass / my nerdy self deserved some teasing too.

Not hard to believe some hick kid out there is downloading egg punk crap and might accidentally hear puppet wipes, xv, and heavy mother 2 on johnny sicks youtube page. How can that bother anyone?

peeblood yep. I'm pretty sure the "freeform freakouts" on the first Red Krayola indulge this principle as well.

paperhose this type of arrogance doesn't come from a place of deep knowledge. The more narrow your view of music, the more likely you are to conflate things in a reductive way.

Marty is hip but this specific tirade could just as easily apply to any hyper specific genre that is purely aesthetic. Less talk more rockin outside the box says me.

It was easy, it was cheap, go and…make multiple drafts, sit on them for a while, have a think, tinker with the song over time, re-record it as many times as necessary, then release it when the results are stunning!

Haha. Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it

What if every band ripped off television personalities instead of devo
