Al Dorado Yeah it is not going to be pretty when we lose our old Fella. He’s had battles with urinary issues over the years, but is somehow surprisingly spry for his senior age. We think about getting another cat, but it would just downgrade his quality of life so that can wait.
PETS THREAD
Pierre the puggle, almost 14! He is a Velcro dog and has separation anxiety. Whenever he's home alone he is in his crate belting out sad operas.
Just today I stepped outside to grab something, left the door open for five seconds, and remarked to my housemate, "I'm so glad we don't have a cat anymore," and she said "I just brought home a cat today, it's in my room right now."
I like pets but I find them much more annoying when they belong to my housemates. The last cat was fine but became the object of her owner's many cat-related meltdowns. The cat before that would escape and then break back in carrying wounded bunnies or rats. No thanks.
There are already so many variables when living with three adults. Do we really need another mouth to feed? Do we really need to imprison a sovereign cat-being for our mere amusement? Do we really need to start talking like a baby in the kitchen at midnight? (The answer is no.)
I never once have been chilling at my house, minding my own business and thought, "this place really needs a cloud of cat piss smell."
Oska the rescue dog. He came over from Bosnia after being found dumped in a bin with his siblings - he and one other survived.
He’s firmly part of the family.
Nathan Loud so what’s your new little fur friend’s name?
Def weird to bring in a pet without consulting housemates - and if you are smelling cat piss all the time, that's a problem of poor cat care.
My cat, Mabel, will be 23 on March 20th.
She’s a little three legged grey and white tuxedo that I adopted in 2002 while living in Portland.
Don’t tell my wife, but Mabel is my everything.
Benji, half-Chihuahua/half Jack Russell. He sometimes looks like a little Rottweiler so I wonder if there's some pinscher in there also. He's my best pal in the world, and his favourite band are the Ramones. We dance around to them and he hops around on his hind legs.
Mark Smith 23?!? What are you feeding that cat?
Haven't met the critter yet but we're off to a bad start.
Two cats: Onyx (6) and Sammy Lynn (12). We adopted both about 4 years ago. Pretty obsessed with them.
I’m also a fish tank dude. I started a planted tank a couple of years ago, with a mix of cardinal tetras, oto catfish, and a Bolivian Ram cichlid. Now that I understand how it all works, I want to branch out and try to either a micro tank (maybe blackwater) or maybe a more formal type of aquascaping. Anyway, it’s a fun hobby that offers many avenues for nerding out.
One cat right now. Marla aka Marla Mooz aka The Mooz aka The 10 year old beauty mooz. We used to be best friends until I had a kid. It’s been almost 2 years and she still hasn’t forgiven me. Don’t think she ever will.
Also used to have also have a Chinese water dragon named Roberto Regellio Ramses and a blind and toothless long coat Chihuahua named Quito. Berto the dragon would whip the shit out of the other pets with his tail and my house was infested with meal worms and crickets that he wouldn’t eat. Good times.

Ripperpotamus, a 15 year old siberian oaf who because the mascot of Bancroft Records when I relaunched it a few years ago.
Von Von, the tiny polydactyl tuxedo who showed up in our backyard (we're thinking from outerspace) about a decade ago.
There was Clementine Puff but she crossed over the rainbow bridge a couple years ago. We had her immortalized in a commissioned painting by Dan Melchior.
Just got an 18 month black rescue cat.
She just adapted to us. Likes to chase string alot

Randall 23?!? What are you feeding that cat?
I started out feed her quality kibble, but when she was about 10 I noticed that her gums seemed to growing over her teeth. I brought her to my vet and it turns out that gum lesions in animal are fairly common. The vet said lots of people just let it ride out and let the gums just absorb the teeth over time, but that it can be a long and painful process. INSANITY! Let Mabel suffer? Fuck that. So I opted to have most of her teeth removed. Sounds terrible, I know, but you should have seen her after she healed up! Just bouncing around the house, purring like never before and genuinely pumped to eat her (new and, out of necessity, soft) food. So to your question, she has been loving on grain free Wellness cans since that procedure. We split small cans into quarters and feed her whenever she asks. We wash her bowl thoroughly in between meals and clean her water bowl and fill it with fresh filtered water a few times a day. I hate going over to someone’s place and see that the pets water bowl has hair and bits of food in it and is slimy to the touch. You wouldn’t want to eat off dirty plates (har) or drink out of slimy cups so don’t make them do it.
She also takes Hyaflex (for joints and whatnot), gets a monthly shot (spacing on the name right now. I’ll pull a receipt when I get home) to help with her arthritis and a fish oil blend to help with her skin/ coat, kindney health, vision and cognitive function. That last realm is the only area where she seems to be slipping a bit. She’ll come into the room, look a little confused and then just pee wherever he happens to be standing.
Also grow her cat grass and catnip inside and outside in her garden. Give her lots of supervised outside time, buy her new toys and beds regularly and just love on her, lots of hugs and kisses and a minimum of 100 “I love you”s a day.
P.S. The girl loves a road trip too. Beach? Mountains? She’s coming with.
Mark Smith sounds like the life!
Happy 23rd birthday to Mabel!!! I don’t know how to post pics on here, but my ig handle is marksmith3535 if ya wanna bask in her glory.
Mark Smith glad to hear she's still kicking!
