Workaday podcasts/ audio books

I listen to podcasts as I walk to/from work and when I walk my dog. Some favourites:

• Ear Hustle. Made in San Quintin Prison. Each ep is about a different facet - cell mates, food, whatever.
• You Don't Know Mojack. Punishingly in-depth look into the SST catalogue. I love it, most sane people should probably pick and choose eps.
• Rock Writ. All about music writing, mostly zines. Eric from Goner was interviewed in one ep.
• Killed by Desk. About the day jobs of punks. It's finished now but always enjoyed it.

For some reason I don't like listening to music as I walk around.

Knowledge Fight and anything in the Cool Zone Media umbrella have been my go-to’s lately and I get all my wrestling news and analysis from Post Wrestling.

Currently listening in the car to Complete Sherlock Holmes as narrated by Simon Vance. I read all of it in Russian when I was a kid, but thought this would provide hours and hours of great entertainment and I was not wrong.

Allez Al I just got totally caught up to current episode on Mojack today. now it will suck waiting for new episodes.

I think there's a similar show about Dischord but holds less appeal despite liking (and owning) lots on that label...

Backlisted podcast is a fave - A bunch of folks sit around and talk about books. The Octavia Butler Episode got me into it.

The Jazz Real Book Dude goes through the Real Book song by song and profiles an artist known for playing that song, breaks down the song's arrangement, and then plays that artist and an alt version of the song. I have learned some interesting things. We tend to skip the interviews.

Allez Al there are 7 interviews in the mjoaxk sunstaxk too. that will be next week's listening.

The Discord one isn't as good for me. I have listened to 2 episodes and the hosts sound like they are announcing a live surgery. kind of dry and boring.

the Pleasent Gehman podcast Devil's Music is really good too. I have only listened to the Falling James episode, but plan on checking out more

A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs: I can't recommend this podcast series highly enough. The guy's voice takes a bit of getting used to but the breadth and depth of information shared is enormous. I started by dipping in and listening to the episodes on particular favourite songs, but then went back to the start and began listening chronologically, which I wish I'd done from the start:

I have enjoyed me some Dollops over the years. Two comedians talking through historical nuggets and infamous figures. A leftist bent.

Like a lot of “comedy,” it’s not for everyone, but it’s approximately 75% less annoying than Last Podcast on the Left.

The Vinyl Guide podcast can be interesting depending on the guest. If you've been around for a long time then you might know more than the host (see the Albini episode). However, a couple that I enjoyed and learned new stuff from were the episodes with Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman) and Willie D (Geto Boys).

Breakfast Dan You Must Remember This is great Hollywood history.

I came here to recommend You Must Remember This' Charles Manson's Hollywood episodes from like 10 years ago. I've listened to them about a dozen times at this point.

Kinda guilty pleasure in DOPEY podcast, bunch of drug addicts telling their worst addiction stories. Totally hit and miss but the urge to "tell us your craziest story about being a white Crips member working as a male hooker addicted to kratom in Las Vegas" is kinda admirable and gets to some good places. Brace Beldon shows up every once in a while to spiel. Music Book Podcast covers some good writers talking about how they wrote their books. Dogpatch is a couple of too-clever-for-anyone's-good soul/hip hop guys (Dante Carfagna and Jon Kirby) discussing micro-genres that basically only exist in their own record collecting minds. Pretty funny and consistently listenable. Timbaland and Memphis Rap episodes stand out in my mind. And story of going to raid a historic collector's collection.

I enjoy Justin Pearson's APOLOGY podcast. I don't think he does it in anymore but he basically sits down and starts the conversation about literature and it usually goes to some super interesting places. Guests have included Sam McPheeters, Bonnie Prince Billy, Ian Svenonius Johnny Ryan, Bill Callahan, Lucy Sante, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Tom Scharpling, Jarvis Cocket, etc.

I got some earbuds last year for work and started listening to Sports Bizarre [https://sportsbizarre.com/].
An interesting and sometimes laugh out loud look at the weird side of sports, covers everything from obscure 18th Century English village games to wife swapping baseball players. Keeps me well entertained.
