I wonder when it was that The Black Lips started falling off best of the aughts lists. At the time I would have included one of their first three albums & probably would have held that opinion up until I can’t remember when.

PaddyBullocks maybe around the time of Burger’s fall? I still hold their 2nd and 3rd albums in pretty high esteem, at least for that era. 2nd one is my favorite. they are playing near me soon and I’m tempted to go to check in and see what they’re doing these days. my expectations are quite low if I’m being honest. I haven’t heard a record since they signed to Vice. by the way, that Shop Fronts album still holds up…

Yeah they still make mine. I was so disappointed with the Veni, Vedi album after the stellar run of the first three, and for like 3-4 years they were the best band on the planet.

I think Arabia Mountain was a good album, and that first one with Jeff Clarke is the best thing they've done since, but I haven't really kept up with them in a long time. Totally different band.

I'm glad to see some Black Forest love. I've heard it critiqued for its "sterile production" but I think it really fits the band and their sound. I love all three A-Frames albums but I think it's my favorite.

I must have blocked the” me to” from my memory but I think I was already a few years into not giving a shit. it was probably a combo of their Vice output and all the boring bands that aped their sound.

problemface Those Bend Sinister recordings are great. Totally different sound than the A-Frames though, less precise and more wild. I think that clinical, mechanic, minimalist songwriting and recording was a big part of the A-Frames' sound. Bend Sinister sounds like a band that's just jamming. I remember there being two recordings/albums and Homeless only released the second on Lp. The other stuff is good too though.

sixbigboys Both Stabs records were amazing. Because they were originally released on cd and the vinyl releases happened after the band had called it quits, they seem to be relatively unknown. I could be wrong though. The second Bird Blobs Lp was tapping into the same kind of swamp rock vibes and is probably even better. To me that's a classic record. I don't even own a copy.

Randall Yeah, sounding sterile is kinda A Frames whole deal, especially on all the LPs. Just went back and listened to both Black Forest and 2, and I can hear that the mix on BF is a little flatter than on 2 (2 does sound fuckin great, though!), but otherwise I’d say the production is pretty identical. I don’t know, I think I just prefer the songwriting a bit more on BF (the Black Forest trilogy and Eva Braun kill!). Still, I can easily see myself swapping it out for 2 as their best album depending on my mood. Just a great band!

sixbigboys I seem to remember Soriano saying something on Termbo about the band losing control of the final mastering on Black Forest and everyone involved being less than enthused with how the production turned out. but the songwriting is stellar and I don’t think it takes away anything. all 3 albums are phenomenal, it’s hard to pick a favorite. if you haven’t heard Bend Sinister (pre-A Frames) definitely check them out too.
