I was going to say Robyn Hitchcock but then would have to embarrassingly mention that I really only became aware of the Soft Boys in the last six-seven years! I think I had them mixed up with Soft Machine in my mind and now recently I find myself wanting to check out more Soft Machine! Also relatedly, Daevid Allen's "Banana Moon" blew me away semi-recently, so I started digging into him a bit more but it's a daunting task.

The Fall is a lot easier if you realize straight away that most everything post-Brix is pretty weak! 😉

Clif The Fall is my favorite band. Grotesque was sorta my “Rosetta stone” in figuring them out. Lmk if you have any questions haha.

Clif Well, everything from Dragnet up until and including Bend Sinister, has to be heard at least once I think. My favorite has always been Perverted by Language, and Hex Enduction Hour, had it been a little shorter.

Lately been into Bend Sinister, but I don't recommend starting with it.

+1 on The Fall, also The Residents. I've listened to their classic releases (Commercial Album, Santa Dog '72, Duck Stab, etc.) which is about 5% of their total output.

Sukebe_GG i think Brix is the “Golden Fall Era”. Anything before the 90s is (mostly) excellent. Post 90s is uneven at best but there are a lot of gems and surprises to be sorted out.

Jack H The Real New Fall Album and Your Future, Our Clutter are probably the best albums of that era. Imperial Wax Solvent has some really great songs (Wolf Kidult Man, 50 year old man, I’ve been duped) but idk about the entire album. Reformation Post TLC is also pretty interesting. Tim Presley of White Fence plays guitar on it.

The Stranglers are great until La Folie. Raven is a masterpiece and the Gospel a bit weirder but still good.

John Zorn has been a longtime favorite of mine, and even so I have probably heard less than 5% of his recorded output. Heard most of the Naked City stuff and Painkiller since initially it was the harder stuff I was interested in. Have explored his neo-classical and lounge/exotica work but still there's so many I've never listened to.

Miles Davis. He seems to be pretty hit or miss. From what I've heard so far, Miles Smiles, Kind of Blue, Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud, Sketches Of Spain and Miles Davis At Carnegie Hall are the best. I never got into classic albums like Bitches Brew and On The Corner. Especially Bitches Brew sounds like a never-ending constipation. But please recommend your favourites, I'm sure he's done more stuff I'd be into.

The Ex are the big one for me. I've liked the couple albums I have heard a lot, and I'm sure they're right up my alley, but I haven't really taken the plunge.

I know it's an old part of this thread, but for anyone looking to get more into The Fall, I'd recommend the newer book You Must Get them All: The Fall on Record. A 600 page book is a big commitment, and it can get dry, but it's a nice exhaustive guide. It pointed me toward some good post-Brix stuff that I'd never bothered to check out.
