HELP ME FIND....

As a longtime subscriber to the "dead internet" theory, I find that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to research the bands and music of yesteryear without getting a bunch of crap that doesn't make sense or isn't quite accurate.

That's part of why I love this forum. I trust that you're all real people with real tastes and knowledge, not algorithmic, SEO-seeking imposters. I've learned so much about music just from the few weeks we've spent on here and it's felt super rewarding.

Anyway this thread is intended for general questions on music scenes, bands, recommendations, etc.. The void that the rest of the internet and dreaded streaming services just can't quite compete with.

I'll start. I found this band Lung Leg a couple of months ago through researching the Kill Rock Stars label. I fell in love with the band but am having a hell of a time finding anything else about the scene they were involved in during the 90s in Scotland. Yea, I know the Vaselines, but what other comparable bands from the time/place should I listen to?

BMX Bandits and The Pastells are the first bands that come to mind. Both started in the 80s but were active throughout the 90s and beyond. Also The Yummy Fur, whose sound is quite similar to Lung Leg's.

Okay, so locationally you could consider Newcastle to be part of that overall scene as it's on the border with Scotland/barely England. We had Slampt Records which was adjacent to a lot of that stuff. Red Monkey, Yummy Fur (Alex Kapranos's pre-Franz Ferdinand Band) who were from Glasgow and think had some member overlap with Country Teasers, Sally Skull (again Scottish, kinda somewhere between garage and riot grrl), Delicate Vomit (I work with the singer's son and he plays in No Teeth, kinda Kraut-y most-punk stuff... they're a lot of fun) and Milky Wimpshake who are maybe the most enduring band of that era. They're playing near me soon, been a while... might head down.

Allez Al I always had an aversion to Yummy Fur, I think it’s the name, but am really digging it.
Phantom Pregnancies was member/members of Huggy Bear right? Remember checking them out in the 90’s due to that connection but haven’t thought about them since

Thanks for all this, @Gimmie Sopor. I started poking around Yummy Fur and I like them quite a bit. Haven’t listened to The Male Nurse but I love country teasers so that is right up my alley.

I LOVE LUNG LEG. Slampt Records catalog for sure, arguably my favorite label of the '90s. Beyond the bands already mentioned (Sally Skull is dead-on), the closest to the Lung Leg sort of thing are probably going to be International Strike Force / Golden Starlet, Bette Davis & the Balconettes, Kenickie (early singles only), Pussycat Trash, Petty Crime.

Dick Johnson featured Jane & Philippa from Lung Leg, a little more garage-leaning but in a similar wheelhouse:

The A-Lines, maybe? They did a really great LP on Sympathy back in 2004 that's sort of adjacent, if Lung Leg had been affiliated with Billy Childish.

I'm going to take the liberty of recommending a British 90s band from south of Scotland. Talking about Phantom Pregnancies out of London. Would guess that they shared stages with many of the bands mentioned in the thread. A bit harsher and more shit-fi garage punk/riot grrrl sounding, but the same vibe and overall aesthetic.

There’s a TV programme on the BBC called: Since Yesterday, The Untold Story of Scotland’s Girl Groups. It features Lung Leg, plus others. Worth a watch if you can get BBC over there.
