New book on Lollapalooza just came out. Read it cause I went the first few years so was interested. Was a "read in a day" book. The people you expected would be raging assholes are in fact, raging assholes. Learned a few things (like Korn apparently objecting to Jon Spencer being above them on the bill so JSBX's management was like "we have a contract, you can buy it out otherwise we will show up & play in the spot contracted" which would've made Korn cry I guess). After 94 or 95 I wasn't paying attention to what was going on with that tour so it was kind of interesting to read about the behind the scenes stuff. Not sure I'd 100% recommend the book; it was fine. Would've been more entertaining with more of the debauchery included. The SPIN article from a few years back had a good amount of that.

The Glen E. Friedman Bad Brains photo book arrived today. Looks pretty nice, haven't cracked it open yet.

I just ordered TROUBLE BOYS on The Replacements. I remember someone's comment on the band being "Bruce Springsteen for nerds who collect punk 7 inches" and thought that was the funniest thing, but I love any book about a band struggling with addictions of any kind in parts of the planet that aren't NYC or LA. Stoked for the read.

Nathan Loud Burning Down the Haus is a great read. most of the bands mentioned are of the street/ crust variety, which is not really my thing. However, the dedication it took to stand out in that regime and the shit those punks went through is inspiring. the commitment they had to have to put on shows and just be punk because they knew they could get tortured for it. worth reading for that perspective alone

Clif That's funny that I just grabbed The Name of the Rose out of a free book box. Actually looking forward to getting to it this summer.

ah sick! i was really surprised to enjoy Name of the Rose when I read it... bought it cos a friend at a record store said it was his favourite book, and got really into all the psychedelic esoteric shit.. probably the first time i'd really tried to care about all the squabbling about bible interpretations and the like, maybe cos the stakes were set so high in the book, spooky potions abound! haha. hope you enjoy it once you get to it

Over the weekend I read A WAILING OF A TOWN "An Oral History of Early San Pedro Punk" 1977-1985 by Craig Ibarra.
Heavy focus on the Minutemen and related bands obviously. Chapters on Saccharine Trust, Bedlam, the story behind Jimmy Smack (reissued in 2022! had been on my want list for a while), local venues, the Last, etc. Really enjoyable read since I didn't come to the table with a ton of prior knowledge (outside the Minutemen that is).

Started the newest Billups Allen book. Already finding it entertaining.

Clif There are a few dedicated ST chapters. A lot of chapters included paragraphs/quotes from Jack Brewer and/or Joe Baiza (but not specifically ST related).

ok, finished the Billups Allen book. More of a journal with a few interviews and reveiws included. I quite like his film selection and feel bad for him that so few people attended. Reads like more of a zine. Quick fun read.

Not sure what's next. I'm drowning in music books (it's a golden age really). Grabbed 'You're With Stupid: kranky, Chicago and the Reinvention of Indie Music' by Bruce Adams from the stacks. Ambitious title for sure.

Just started The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano. Its 600+ pages and time is hard to find these days, so it might take me a minute, but 30 pages in and really enjoying it so far.

That was a Termbro recommend for me and I totally fell for it. I loved it, and think I like 2666 is even better. Have Nazi Literature in the Americas in my to-read pile.

Randall The Dutch translation I bought of this looked great and the story seemed appealing. I wanted to like the book, but lost my attention after the first 100 or so pages. Bolano can write, but the story didn't have enough momentum to keep me on board at the time. Don't know if that was me or the book. I definitely struggle with books over 300 pages. I read The Skating Rink by Bolona and liked that.

I'll give the Savage Detectives another shot once I finished the book I am reading now, which is horrible and has way more than 300 pages so chances are I'll put it away soon. It's called Independent People and is written by Nobel Prize Winner Laxness from Iceland. Thusfar I hate it. Lots of descriptions of nature and folklore. Only Russians can get away with that.

Randall 2666 is definitely worth your time - I was just more immersed in the world of The Savage Detectives. 2666 is very dense and I'm sure it's better on a second and third read. Maybe I should dive in.
