Do you and your partner like the same kind of music?

I have a few friends whose partners cannot stand their taste in music. Which is not always the ultimate scenario if you are a music nerd who needs your daily fix. For me, it works out fine. We both dig psych, kraut, soul, country, folk, punk, post punk, synth & minimal wave and lots of classic 60s bands like The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Kinks.

However, my girlfriend can't cope with genres like free jazz, hardcore (there are some exceptions, she loves Chain Whip for instance), noise/industrial and music in general that can be categorised as experimental. So I mostly listen to stuff like that when she is away from home.

My wife has a very surface level appreciation for music. So while we share an interest in 80s goth/synth music or something like Devo, she's definitely not a music nerd and definitely does not enjoy anything with high levels of distortion. Her thing is movies. I'm not a movie guy. Somehow we've been together for almost 20 years though.

My girlfriend definitely isn't into noise rock/hardcore/free jazz/heavy psych stuff that I love. But it's also really cool playing things she doesn't know and ends up digging, like The Feelies, Flying Nun Stuff, Big Dipper, and a bunch more. There's also the standards we can both always agree on, like The Velvets, Neil Young, Bee Gees, Kinks, etc.

There's a lotta crossover. We met at a punk show. She's more into indie/emo stuff than I am. But we see eye to eye on a ton of stuff. Flipper, Fang, Gories, Velvets, Can, GG, Oblivians, Clean...all mutual favorites

My wife doesn't have well defined music tastes. She generally does not like the more abrasive budget rock stuff like Reatards or something like that but for some crazy reason she actually like Country Teasers. She seems overall fine with my broader taste stuff and supports me listening to bad music when she isn't around.

I would much rather be with someone who isn't super into music than is into music I wouldn't want to listen to. I once went on one date with some girl who said her favorite band is Bouncing Souls and she wasn't going to work out for multiple reasons but I certainly could not listen to Bouncing Souls for the rest of my life.
