Saw Becoming Led Zeppelin at the little art house theater this evening. I'm not much of a fan but it was good. Over two hours but didn't feel like it was that long.

At one point there was a photo shown of a marquee with Country Joe and the Fish headlining over LZ. I inadvertently made an audible "ugh" sound. I think people heard me

Al Dorado I want to go see it tomorrow but I’m gonna go IMax if at all possible. Went and saw Wild Zero tonight at the Hollywood. It’s been over 20 years since I’ve last seen it. I really hope they find a way to make Wild Zero 2. This trailer is insane

Randall The art house sells beer and fancy gelato. Also no previews. Lights go down, movie starts. There's also a good dive bar a few blocks away if one is up for it

BORN INNOCENT: The Redd Kross story w in-person McDonald brothers Q&A last night at the Hollywood was a much needed shot in the arm.

Dodge there are some wild stories in that doc!

Dodge I was there too! I was blown away. Succeeded in telling the rock n roll brothers in LA story where the Sparks doc didn’t.

Rewatched Terminator 2: Judgment Day. I've probably seen it half a dozen times, but it's been so long that revisiting it has given it a certain freshness. Totally holds up. I would say it is a more or less perfect sci-fi action flick and one of the few sequels that is at least as good as the first one. It would have been a perfect end to the saga of evil robots from the future, but as usual Hollywood thought otherwise. I also discovered that there are six films in total and not four as I thought. I didn't know about 2015's Terminator Genisys and 2019's Terminator: Dark Fate from 2019, but they seem to be complete rubbish if we go by the opinions of various critics and keyboard warriors.

rewatched T2 recently too, what an all-timer hey? such a drag that all these other terminator's exist to dump shit on the originals. Alien and Terminator franchises are so weirdly similar in that respect... two near perfect originals and then total dross thereafter... i dream of the day when the never ending franchise reboot sequel extended universe complex implodes and we get NEW THINGS in the cinema again..

watched antonioni's RED DESERT (1964) the other night, i think his first in colour? it was great... the most bonkers shots of industrial Italy over the top of a nervous breakdown, real good stuff to zone out and sink into.

Dodge 1976-1981 Los Angeles, I don't think that full story will ever be told. I comb original issues of Slash and there's stuff in there -- a lot of it unrecorded bands that existed briefly -- that I still discover. There's the bad stuff too.

I haven't seen Alien 3 for a long time, but I remember it being pretty decent. The rest of the franchise is crap though. In any case, it's not on par with the first two, so the prospect of a "perfect trilogy" was ruined there.

BARELY HUMAN i dream of the day when the never ending franchise reboot sequel extended universe complex implodes and we get NEW THINGS in the cinema again..

Yep. At least when it comes to Hollywood, where nostalgia and safe bets tend to outweigh creativity.

            BARELY HUMAN RED DESERT

It's been a few years but I loved this movie when I first watched it. Might have to revisit it again. Thanks for the reminder.

            DRUK (Another Round) 2020

Danish movie about 4 middle aged teachers experimenting with on-the-job day-drinking.

Was having a tough day Sunday and my friend suggested I throw on It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. Can't believe it took me so long to sit down with this one. Still remarkably funny! Quite a bit darker than I was expecting too. Jonathan Winters tearing down an entire gas station with his bare hands. Magic. Dick Shawn rules in it too, but it's hard to pin down favorite performances amongst so many top-tier ones. Wild that it's the same director as Inherit the Wind!

Watched Godland the other night. Well technically over the course of a few nights because I kept falling asleep. The movie is pretty slow but the sleep had more to do with my tendency to do so than the film itself.
It’s an Iceland film from 2022 about a 19th century Danish priest sent to Iceland to establish a church and his struggles to maintain sanity while trudging through the rough undeveloped terrain of Iceland over the course of a nightless summer. Slow and uneasy but really enjoyed it. Apparently the story was built around five pictures that were discovered from that time frame which are also the first five pictures of Iceland. It’s up on criterion right now

              • Mor replied to this.

Watched Butcher's Crossing on a whim as was surprised & quite into it. Had assumed I'd never see Nicolas Cage in a decent movie ever again, but enjoyed Pig , so why not give this a go? Anyway, very much in the spirit of 70s tough-guy cult classics, so much in that mold that you imagine it being made then and held 'til now...'cept it would've starred Bronson or Burt. Worth a look!

BARELY HUMAN rewatched T2 recently too, what an all-timer hey?

Rewatched it 2 days ago thanks to this thread, and I couldn’t believe how good it was – usually when I smoke weed I have the attention span of a rabbit, especially with movies, but this one kept me entertained ALL THE WAY, even after the 3rd joint. Well done, Governor!

I just rewatched Terminator 2 last night. So good.

Total Punk forum wholesale approval of the Terminator 2 rewatch!

I’ll go ahead and be in the minority here, watched T2 recently and didn’t love it. To me the flaw lies in pacing, and it could have an hearty 30 min trim off the length. Also don’t love Jimmy Cameron’s signature move of adding a kid to sequels(see Aliens for similar complaints from me).

The original flick on the other hand is a perfect genre film.

Al Dorado I thought the Dylan flick was great but yeah I feel similarly about music biopics. I kinda feel like "Walk Hard" ruined that genre in a way.

Vinnie Vacuum I thought it started off really strong but by the end I felt like "ooookay. wrap it up". Also was tired of the accent after 2 hours.

Saw The Fuzztones vs the World tonight at the Hollywood. Truly boring, and that’s my positive take.

Randall I was on the fence about watching Godland but I like your review so I'll give it a go.

Makes me think of Enys Men. I went to see it at a theater alone and got really scared but it was so visually stunning on a big screen that I'm glad I did that anyway.

Movie on french underground movement in east france

Saw this finally. Incredible flick. Every frame looks like an Eggleston photo.

                      dr_chile

I borrowed it through interlibrary loan. There's a book of stills from the film and the DVD comes with it

Mystery_Ship I second this take. It’s been a minute since my last rewatch, but I remember the whole detour to Mexico feeling more like a drag than a well-earned reprieve from all the action (despite all the incredible action). And, yeah, John Connor’s bitchin’ 90s ‘tude really grated on me. For my money, T1 is the real winner.

But I’ll wade even further into minority territory and declare that I prefer T3 to T2. To be sure, T2 is a much better movie, still, I find T3’s tone to be more palatable and its positioning of Judgement Day as an inevitability to be aptly bleak for the franchise and also solves some of the time paradoxes introduced in T2.

Salvation and Genisys are close to unwatchable, but Genisys is batshit enough to have some entertainment value.

And Dark Fate is better than most folks would have you believe (though, still not very good).

                        Mystery_Ship
T2 doesn't hold up for me. Weirdly it's too cutesy? Too "aw yeah my big robot friend!" with annoying kid energy.

The Terminator is a lean, mean machine. Total cyberpunk bliss. Cameron's only perfect movie.

Not a movie but currently watching the animated series Common Side Effects on Adult Swim and its plot is like the TV version of a Thomas Pynchon novel, ie great and full of conspiracies, paranoia, mushrooms, scientists and weirdos.

dr_chile Two-Lane Blacktop is reminiscent of Eggleston and Stephen Shore's work. Hellman shot it wonderfully. It's one of my favorite movies. I built a '56 Chevy so I'm very familiar with the vehicle in the film.

I just turned one of my coworkers onto Two-Lane Blacktop

I've seen the film over 50 times. The car was built by Richard Ruth. It was cutting edge for its time. Rear disc brakes in late 1970? Mind blown. That's the other aspect. The Brotherhood of Street Racers in the beginning of the film were a legit group outta LA. Ross Johnson used to go to the Lakeland racetrack where James Taylor races the Corvette. It works for me on every level.

Where my Sly Stone heads? Sly Lives! was great. Nice companion to the book from last year.
