of the canon, WIPERS and DEAD MOON... absolute best bands, everything that followed in their wake not so much

more recent years, i think of CONEHEADS / CCTV as great bands that influenced some real stinkers.. TOTAL CONTROL, likewise... incredible stuff but the stuff that came after and tried to ape it is a real goddamned bummer

I'd say The Fall have a LOT to answer for, living in the UK and the ubiquity of post-punk with heavy Fall influences has been brutal for the past 15 years or so.

My beloved Leatherface are responsible for some bad stuff. But some good stuff.

Devo might be the winner here, some truly dogshit music has been inspired by them. All by bands who just aren't weird. You need to be really off to do that stuff and normies fail miserably.

I remember seeing an interview with Mark E. Smith where he said he would intentionally avoid recruiting Fall fans to join the band. He said they'd play their interpretation of what the Fall sound like and it was always "rubbish".

I can’t think of any Dead Moon knockoffs off hand. they have a sincerity that’s nearly impossible to imitate. Gun Outfit seems to be influenced by Dead Moon, but they’re good.

haha damn... that feels like a trick question re SMV but i'm sure the case could be mounted!

i think re: dead moon.. i'm feeling more spiritually 'bands you love so much but hate bands that are influenced by them'... maybe i'm thinking more inspired by than influenced by... like i can't think of a specific example, but so much of grunge/alt-rock owes a little to em, and then the worst of the 90s/00s garage revival... is spiritually dead moon but not even close to what made DM so great (i think here just jack daniels soaked RnR monolith...) maybe my DM comment holds no water!

new addition though is NEW ORDER... 'Leave Me Alone' was playing in a cafe the other day, and for the briefest of moments i thought it was The National, or some kinda 2000/2010s commercial indie type thing and i cringed... cringed at NEW ORDER who i love very much.

like with DEAD MOON... best band, but there are 100 bands with DM tattoos who suck ass is my point. NEW ORDER? best band... but 100 bands on historical Glastonbury line-ups or somethin with Power, Corruption & Lies in their top 10 albums of all time

good call on Black Lips. that terrible band The Growlers started as a Black Lips carbon copy and they weren’t the only ones. how ‘bout Vivian Girls? would Best Coast exist if not for them? Dum Dum Girls? Crystal Stilts? haha.

Always felt that the Vivian Girls had a load of likeminded bands at the same time, they shared a drummer with Crystal Stilts and Dum Dum Girls. I was listening to Grass Widow the other day. Holds up.

Cassie Ramone played a solo gig here last year but I was out of town, apparently was a lot of fun.

I dig Cassie Ramone’s latest record. she’s cool. always thought Vivian Girls stood a cut above those other similarly jangly/noisy bands from that era.
