4 track recording

Recently recorded my bands album on 4 track (aside from vox which we are dubbing digital) It sounds rough as fuck (which i like) but I'm kind of a recording neanderthal and will just point one mic at a drum kit. always wanting new tips n tricks tho. Bass is tricky for me.

Also I've seen a few ppl run stuff through the 4 track and then directly into a computer without actually putting it on tape? Does that still equate to a 4 track sound?

For fellow 4 track dabblers what's your set up like?

Put an SM57 in a shoe box with the lid off with the open end facing down at the foot pedal of the drums. That's your drum track. When mixing, run it through a compressor and then through a spring reverb if you have one. This is essentially the Kinks drum sound on a budget. Really easy to achieve too
