What makes you put on a sour face when you're listening to music?

Big one for me: despite a special few "talk-singers" I can't stand spoken word on a song. Write a melody or at least shout it out. This ain't poetry.

Any sort of current band with whiny vocals. I stopped enjoying that when I was 23.

That super bright pinky snare sound most commonly associated with pop punk that sometimes makes it way into otherwise good songs and ruins them

Mostly an issue in older music, but I hate when a classic band that otherwise rocks like hell starts addressing someone as "little girl" or even just outright saying they're into a high schooler. I get those gross old dudes were all about that but UGH. At least don't tattle on yourself in your god damn lyrics. Was just listening to NRBQ and having a lovely time until they dropped the "she's still in school" line. Gross.

Humor. There are a couple bands that can pull of being goofy (Sewer Trout and the Retail Simps being just two examples), but I generally can’t hang with zany. Like, I’d LOVE the Kinks were it not for their goofy British humour bits.

This is interesting, weird vs. wacky, and Beefheart vs. Zappa sums it up nicely. Two sides of a cosmic coin. I think we can all agree that the authorities should have taken Dweezil at the moment of birth.

MAJOR PET PEEVE:

Anyone for any reason saying "city streets" in a song. So lazy and nonsensical and cliche. Yeah, you're walking the city streets, I get it. Maybe you could just say streets? Or maybe city? Or better yet, say nothing, for you are without meaning.

And let's be real, you were using the sidewalk. "I walk the city sidewalks." There, that's better.
