One sure sign I am now old as fuck is I am pretty into the bird life around me. Anyways, today seems to be the turning point - we’ve had no birds for the past month: a few house sparrows, passing geese, & the turkey vultures. Today we have cardinals, blue jays, more sparrows, and probably some grackles. Waiting for the robins to come take over. so how’s your birds?
For the birds
Been feeding the Anna’s hummingbirds all winter as I usually do. They are little assholes and don’t deserve it.

Big fan of the Merlin app over the last year. Up here on Vancouver Island we got the return of our most obnoxious resident, the Stellar Jay, in effect right now.
My wife has been very diligent about keeping the Hummingbird juice flowing and not frozen throughout the winter, so we always got lots of Anna’s zooming around our porch.
I would not expect Hummingbirds in Canada in the winter - but I would have no idea what to expect. The Merlin app is sort of my Pokemon Go - i just caught a Dark-eyed Junco

We’re the mildest climate in the country out on the west coast.
I drive along an estuary/bay every day on the way to work and the Bald Eagle scene the last week has been nuts. Very distracting gawking at soaring Eagles instead of the road. I think some fish must be starting to spawn and there are good eats to be had.
Woodpecker has been nearby for a week or so. Annoying.
Crows, sparrows, blue jays are around as usual.

I've heard tell of these year-round Canadian hummingbirds. Cool to hear you got em.
Here on the east coast (Nova Scotia) we started hearing the blue jays stake out their nesting territories a few weeks ago, which I now consider (i.e. now that I'm aware of it) the earliest sign of Spring (and a great way to fend off the deep winter blues). Apparently someone saw a robin the other day. Apparently...
As far as seabirds go, last week I was working on a boat and noticed the black guillemots (similar size to puffins) still have their winter plumage. Heading back out next week - will provide updates.
I saw a coal tit the other day, sweet little burds. I mostly just see seagulls, pigeons, sparrows and starlings in the city.
Hey fellow bird nerds
I have a vermillion flycatcher and a handful of Aberts towhee at my house that I see everyday. The mockingbirds and flickers are starting to show up too.

Fellow bird boy here. Nothing exciting to report from Indianapolis at the moment: lots of song sparrows and house finches. I may have seen a black vulture on my run today, which is kind of a rare treat, but I wasn’t wearing my glasses, so it’s unconfirmed.
Lots of Northern Flicker and King Fisher along the Columbia River Gorge last weekend.
Birds are the best. Crows especially.
Have confirmed: guillemots are turning black again. Spring's a'springin mother fuckers.
