EDIT: okay I know rip off sounds bad but I don’t mean it in a bad way, I guess what I’m getting at is a band writing a song “in the style of” another band.

There was a thread on here recently about bands you haven’t scratched the surface of. My answer to this is honestly Butthole Surfers. Just kind of a gap in my studies of 80s weirdness rock.

I decided today to explore their discography and pulled up the Spotify to start listening. I had their sophomore album on, and made it to the track entitled “In the Cellar”. I wasn’t looking at the tab and thought, oh no, the cursed app had started autoplaying and thwarted my plans to listen to the entire album by autoplaying a Public Image Ltd. song I hadn’t heard before. Alas, the track was not a PiL song but in my opinion an excellent homage to the band or in other words a “rip off”. I say that very lovingly.

So here’s the thread:
WHATS YOUR FAVORITE RIP-OFF SONGS, AKA SONGS THAT SOUND LIKE THEY CAME FROM A DIFFERENT BAND?

Just randomly came across this song from a friend, who was digging into Dr. Demento's whole world. I listened and it sounded pretty familiar.

Turns out the MES was a Nervous Norvus fan.

And I guess he covered Transfusion some years after Dragnet.

Of course, The Fall's catalog has zillions of references and interpolations of other songs. The Annotating The Fall site is a rabbit hole of all the stuff they ripped off, lovingly.

Maybe an interpolation or appropriation doesn't quite fit the thread's spirit. Maybe it's more like "why does BAND X have a song that sounds like BAND Y?" But The Fall were one of those bands who could do basically anything, rip off anything, while still sounding like themselves.

Nathan Loud totally, this is why the fall is the best. I guess rip off has too negative a connotation for what I’m getting at, but I don’t mean it in a bad way.

This has a very strong Hüsker Dü "Grant Hart song" vibe

posted this in the other thread but VU playing a mean pinball

I have an article in the works involving Tav Falco and in an interview with him I asked if his rendition of Jessie Mae Hemphill's "Streamline Train" also incorporated the melody from "Merry Christmas, Pretty Baby." I thought it did , but he said no.

The Saints can write a mean Stones song. Messin with the Kid is the best Sway cover around.

I think last year I figured out that The Misfits’ “Some Kind Of Hate” ripped off Little Peggy March and “I Will Follow Him”- I like it.

Little Peggy March reminded me of this. Spectrum ripping off Evie Sands

Oh boy, I love this thread
One of my favorites, ripping off Joy Division

Here's a pretty good list of the songs GG plagiarised. The seven videos/songs could use some editing, but just skip to the mid-way points to the get the points.

I’ve always been mystified that Mr. Soul was such a rip of the world-famous riff from Satisfaction, which had come out less than two years before. Such a bold choice. He said he wrote the song in 5 minutes. Yeah I wonder how.

The song still rules and Neil Young rules.

The Gants are a fun band.
Rip off of Ticket to Ride

Rip off of Heart of Stone

Rapid Adapter Here's a pretty good list of the songs GG plagiarised.

"Die When You Die" is way way better than the DAM song for my money

Psychedelic Furs sounding like the Stranglers

Randall are they ripping off a specific song? My knowledge of The Stranglers is pretty much Rattus Norvegicus and Golden Brown.

Future Trash no the original topic was songs that sound like they came from a different band, and anytime I hear this song I always think its the Stranglers for a minute
