Al Dorado Ooh, I've been wondering about this one! It looks great. Can I ask where you bought it? I remember looking and not being able to find anything shipping out of the U.S. but it wasn't the most thorough search.

Just finished the first book, 'City Of Glass' in Paul Auster's NY Trilogy.
Dug the hell out of it, nice mix of man's life taken over by unknown forces , hard boiled, ok maybe medium boiled noir & a bit of Knut Hamsun's frantic spiraling of Hunger. Bout to dive into the next one, 'Ghosts' .

I'm reading Biography of X by Catherine Lacey. I'm a 100 pages and I like it.

Just finished Stalin's Children by Owen Matthews. It has its flaws, but tells some interesting historical stories. I enjoyed reading it. It made me want to read Russian fiction covering the wild 1990's. I'm sure there was a lot, but don't know any authors nor works. Anybody? Kevin Failure would know...

Another book I enjoyed was The Seven Madmen by Roberto Arlt. I feel like I only understood part of it and immediately started rereading it. It had some nice dark bits that made me feel all fuzzy inside. An absurdist existential satire? Strange yet fascinating.

ever/never Knut Hamsun's frantic spiraling of Hunger

I read and enjoyed this when I was a youth. I later read Notes from Underground and thought, wow, Hamsun was a hack. He also wrote possibly the worst take of all time. So bad it's kinda funny.

Yah I would only say the main character has a touch of the classic 'man wandering the streets and spiraling ever further into madness' that I always link to Hunger. Not quite as feverish as Hamsun.

Damn - never saw that Hitler obit from him, welp . Of course, I do have a bit of a soft spot for misanthropes.

Funny, I've been on the look out for that Arlt book, hoping it pops up randomly somewhere soon.

Nathan Loud Yes. The Norwegians had him officially diagnosed as mad in later life in order to keep his standing as a Nobel prize winner intact.

It's interesting both Hamsun and Céline had Nazi sympathies. Of course a lot of people had. I don't think it's far fetched to say both Hamsun and Céline were not too emotionally balanced. That seems to make for good art and bad politics.

Both were individualists and misanthropes. No fans of mankind. Hamsun can be a bit heavy in his love for nature and the wild, a boy scout mentality if you will, sentiments that were an important part of Nazism as well. I think the destructive angry message of nazism probably had a lot of appeal on these two writers too. Ultimately they were angry at the world. A shrink would say they felt deprived of the attention and respect they felt they deserved. Freud would say they were looking for a father figure to set the record straight. Adolf Hitler could maybe do just that.

I hate Freud.

My reading goal for this year is to make this the year of reading pop nonfiction about my morbid curiosities. So far the reading list is:

Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief by Alex Gibney

CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties by Dan Piepenbring and Tom O’Neil

And finally, Deep Politics and the Death of JFK by Peter Dale Scott

Anyone have other suggestions I could add to this list?

This book is fantastic (though long), and I think someone on this board pointed out that Errol Morris made a documentary version, which intrigues me greatly.

filthqueen666 cool list! I liked Chaos quite a bit. You'll have to let us know if that Peter Dale Scott book is good. I've heard him interviewed on podcasts. He's definitely very smart, but also might be kind of a crank.
