I like to rock 'n' roll, but I'm also prone to a good cry/mope-about/sulk. In those times, I want music that reflects what I'm feeling. What are your big juicy sad favorites?

Currently digging into Grandaddy's latest album which is fitting the mood. Bill Fay is a big one. Silver Jews and Purple Mountains of course.

Early protomartyr is some of my favorite sad boy post-punk, as well as the 70s Manchester scene. This track in particular about social anxiety and drinking too much:

My primary go to is The Hunches' Exit Dreams, there's something particularly effective about the contrast between the more raucous songs and the downer tracks that really works. Any of the Sex Church albums are favorites for this as well, especially for rainy day gloom.

A lot of times, for me, the sad songs that hit the hardest are sparse and stark and grainy. Like, just a voice and a guitar, or just a voice and piano, recorded crudely in a way that makes it sound even more like it's coming from some faraway godforsaken place of pain and loneliness and sorrow.
